BROOKTROUT ANNOUNCES THE TR118: 8-CHANNEL, 8-DSP FAX/VOICE CARD; MAJOR INSTALLATION AT PR NEWSIRE

NEEDHAM, Mass., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Brooktrout Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: BRKT) today announced availability of the TR118, the industry's first 8-channel/8-DSP universal port card. The TR118 performs enhanced fax and voice processing on eight channels, each channel powered by a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP).
The new levels of density achieved by Brooktrout's TR118 allow developers to build high-performance, high-volume applications. The TR118 is designed for large enhanced fax and voice systems for service providers such as telephone companies, independent service bureaus and large end users.
In the first commercial application of the TR118, PR Newswire, the world's leading corporate electronic media distribution service, is delivering exciting new fax services to its customers under the nameplate PRONTO. The fax system delivering the PRONTO services, designed by PR Newswire, was developed by Facsimile Marketing, Inc. (FMI) of Stamford, Conn. using Brooktrout's TR118 fax boards. FMI is a leading fax service bureau specializing in high-volume operations with rapid response time.
PR Newswire's PRONTO Direct, a broadcast fax service, delivers documents to a pre-selected audience at a specific time. PR Newswire clients can use PRONTO Direct to get critical information to their shareholders, board members and officers via fax within minutes. The PRONTO system can fax more than 20,000 pages per hour and users get fast feedback on the results of their fax transmissions to indicate exactly when the documents were received.
Another PR Newswire service, PRONTO On-Call, utilizes Brooktrout's patented "fax-on-demand" technology to deliver pre-stored documents by fax when callers request them by dialing a customized "800" number. This service is used by sales and marketing departments for distribution of price lists, product specifications and brochures. The publishing industry uses the service to replace reader response cards and eliminate the associated overhead costs. And companies use PRONTO On-Call to provide critical data that analysts, shareholders, employees and the media require regarding important corporate events.
Callers can access the PRONTO On-Call system 24 hours a day, allowing subscribers to update the documents at any time. Personal identification numbers (PINs) can be assigned to callers for access security if desired. The On-Call system can respond to over 4,000 requests per hour with an average response time of 17 seconds.
Ian Capps, president of PR Newswire said, "We chose Brooktrout Technology for out PRONTO services because we realized that the TR118 is the most advanced fax product available today. Brooktrout's enhanced fax technology is launching some very important new services for PR Newswire."
The PR Newswire system was developed by FMI with over 216 fax channels, in nine networked servers. Each server contains three Brooktrout TR118 cards connected to a T1 interface card using the MVIP standard bus. FMI developed specialized applications and call handling software to maximize outgoing telephone line utilization and call completion.
"Brooktrout's TR118 boards allowed us to deliver a high-performance, high-volume system cost effectively," said FMI President Jeremy Grayzel, "and the Unix-based Brooktrout software enabled us to develop the sophisticated applications PR Newswire required."
Brooktrout's president, Eric Giler added, "The TR118 is based on our successful TR114 card, which has been shipping since September 1992. Companies like FMI are building powerful systems based on our TR Series products; these systems allow end users like PR Newswire to add new revenue-generating services to their portfolios."
Both the TR118 and TR114 can simultaneously send or receive faxes or voice messages on each channel, and channel functionality can be user- defined. Each channel is powered by a National Semiconductor NS32FX16 DSP with standard 1 MB of RAM per channel. The card is configured with both MVIP and PEB digital interfaces, allowing full digital connection with telephone interface cards and other resources, such as voice recognition cards.
The TR118 uses the same TR-Series Applications Programming Interface (API) as the established TR112 and TR114. The API is a "C" language library of call functions that simplifies development of applications. It is supported under UNIX, QNX, OS/2 and DOS; support for other advanced multitasking operating systems is under development. Quantity one pricing for the TR118 is $5495 with quantity discounts available for developers and distributors.
Brooktrout is a market and technical leader in voice and facsimile messaging. The company was the first to introduce multi-channel fax cards, combine voice and facsimile on a single card, use Direct Inward Dial (DID) for autorouting of facsimile messaging, and provide facsimile support for UNIX platforms.
