BROOKLYN UNION GAS PURCHASES NATURAL GAS-POWERED VANS
 FROM MINORITY-OWNED DODGE DEALERSHIP
BROOKLYN, N.Y., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wayne Dodge, a minority-owned dealership in Wayne, N.J., announced an agreement to sell to Brooklyn Union Gas Co. 30 natural gas-powered Dodge vans.
Brooklyn Union distributes natural gas to customers in Brooklyn, Queens and Statton Island, N.Y.
"We have about 300 vans in our fleet that we've converted to run on natural gas," said Bill Federici, General Manager - Corporate Communications for Brooklyn Gas. "We're replacing some of the older vans which we converted to run on natural gas with vehicles dedicated to run on natural gas and Chrysler builds a fine product."
The vans are Chrysler's 1992 model Dodge B-250 full-size passenger/ cargo wagons built to operate exclusively on compressed natural gas (CNG). They are the cleanest fuel-burning vehicles in the country.
Natural gas-powered vehicles emit less carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocarbon pollutants than gasoline-powered vehicles. These pollutants interact with sunlight to produce ozone, the principal component of smog. Natural gas-powered vehicles also emit less carbon dioxide, the principal "greenhouse" gas, than gasoline-powered vehicles.
Chrysler began production in March of a planned 2,500 CNG vans.
Richard O. Geiss, Chrysler executive engineer for truck engine systems, said the vans are targeted for fleet service because fleet users have the most developed network for refueling natural gas-powered vehicles.
The vans, however, are available to retail customers through Dodge dealerships.
The natural gas-powered vans, equipped with Dodge Magnum 5.2-liter V-8 engines adapted to run on natural gas, have a range of about 200 miles. The vehicles carry a full Chrysler factory warranty.
The vans are available in all 50 states. The federal government has purchased 76 CNG vehicles.
"Chrysler Corporation is the first company to make alternative fuel vehicles available for both retail and fleet sales," said Azzie Khubani, President of Wayne Dodge. "It is an honor to us that Wayne Dodge is one of the first dealers to negotiate significant sales of these environmentally friendly vehicles."
