BROOKLYN UNION GAS JOINS MAYFLOWER CONSORTIUM

 CALGARY, Alberta, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary: TRP) and ANR Pipeline Co., a subsidiary of The Coastal Corp. (NYSE: CGP) , announced today that Brooklyn Union Gas Co. (NYSE: BU) has agreed to join the proposed Mayflower Gas Transmission System as a sponsor of the project.
 The Mayflower system will extend 200 miles east from the Iroquois Gas Transmission System, serving markets from Canajoharie, N.Y. to Boston. Construction of the project is subject to receipt of necessary regulatory approvals. Initial capacity will be 350 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, and the anticipated in service date is 1996.
 Construction costs for the Mayflower project are estimated at (U.S.) $320-$360 million and will be project financed.

 Brooklyn Union Gas Co. is a U.S. $1.7 billion New York-based distribution firm which serves more than 1 million customers in New York City's boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The company has natural gas exploration, production and marketing interests in the United States and Canada as well as power generation and propane distribution investments. Like TransCanada and ANR, Brooklyn Union has an equity interest in the Iroquois Gas Transmission System, a 370-mile pipeline that transports natural gas from Canada to the Northeast.
