BROOKLYN HIGH SCHOOL WALL STREET LAW FIRM CELEBRATE TWO BICENTENNIALS

BROOKLYN HIGH SCHOOL WALL STREET LAW FIRM CELEBRATE TWO BICENTENNIALS
NEW YORK, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A major Wall Street law firm and a high school in Brooklyn will celebrate two bicentennials this evening.
James Madison High School, at 3787 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, and Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, with offices at 100 Maiden Lane, Manhattan, will participate in commemorating the unusual double anniversary -- the 200th for both the Bill of Rights and the law firm.
Highlight of the events scheduled for 7:30 this evening in the high- school auditorium will be the announcement of a $20,000 scholarship grant by Cadwalader to the school's Law Institute. The grant, to provide college scholarship money to Madison students, is believed to be the largest presented by a law firm to a public high school.
Cadwalader began the association with Madison over ten years ago when the firm became a "founding participant" in the Mentor program, a program that pairs high schools and law firms in an effort to bring law to the school classroom and high school students to the law firm environment.
"Cadwalader has enjoyed its association with Madison and is proud of the many programs developed and educational benefits achieved," William Natbony, the Cadwalader attorney responsible for the firm's Mentor program, stated. "Cadwalader believes that the future of the legal profession lies in schools like this one across the country; so the firm decided to start celebrating its 1992 bicentennial a little early with this grant."
Among the 41 New York City high schools which participated in an annual Mentor Moot Court competition, Madison's team placed first last year and second this year.
This evenings's program will begin with a "Town Meeting of 1791" staged by the Law Institute seniors. A gospel choir performance will follow.
Then a mock trial on a First Amendment issue will be held, with Natbony serving as "judge."
The Law Institute of the school is a four-year honors program instituted in 1976. It is designed to prepare students for possible career in law and law related fields -- from corrections to psychology to the legal and paralegal professions. The program is coordinated by Sonia Lerner, a social studies teacher at Madison.
The first recipient of the Cadwalader grant has been selected. He is Leotis Sanders, a 1991 Madison graduate now attending the University of Rochester. The remaining recipients will be selected from the Law Institute seniors on the basis of both merit and need and the grants will be awarded throughout Cadwalader's bicentennial year.
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft was founded in New York City in 1792 by John Wells and has been in continuous practice ever since. Cadwalader will be the first Wall Street law firm to enter its third century.
