BACKGROUND: U.S. Olympic Spirit Week, May 11-17, is being observed by 28,000 post offices nationwide. During the observation local residents can add their names to Olympic history and send their best wishes to the U.S. Olympic Team by signing a piece of the world's largest postcard which features a good luck message to American athletes. In July, the 28,000 pieces of the postcard (one piece for each participating post office) will be assembled for the "America's Salute to Team U.S.A." celebration in Washington, D.C. The fully assembled card, larger than three football fields and bearing hundreds of thousands of signatures, will convey the best wishes of Americans to their team as they prepare to leave for the Barcelona Summer Games.
