BRITISH AIRWAYS REPORTS PRELIMINARY TRAFFIC AND CAPACITY
 STATISTICS - APRIL 1992
NEW YORK, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- British Airways (NYSE: BAB) revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in April increased by 23.9 percent compared with the previous year, and by 10.3 percent compared with two years ago. Scheduled available seat miles (ASMs) in April increased by 13.9 percent, with the 71.1 percent passenger load factor up by 5.7 points compared with April, 1991.
Strong demand associated with the Easter holiday produced buoyant traffic (RPM) growth in April in much the same way as the Christmas holiday did in December, 1991. However, premium traffic in April continued to show no signs of further recovery from economic recession, with demand remaining well below April, 1990 levels.
Traffic growth on U.K./Europe routes (26.1 percent) marginally outperformed that on Intercontinental services (23.4 percent), with increases in passenger load factor of 6.0 points and 5.6 points, respectively, compared with the previous year.
Cargo traffic (CTMs) carried on British Airways scheduled services in April increased by 6.7 percent compared with the previous year, with total scheduled RTMs up by 18.6 percent.
 Highlights of the Month
-- British Airways U.S. Executive Club Frequent Traveller program exceeded its year-end target of 200,000 members in just six weeks. To date overall membership has risen to 220,000, prompting the airline to set a new goal of 350,000 by Dec. 31.
-- British Airways will not have to cut back frequencies on its Tokyo route in order to provide more slots for Virgin Atlantic. The Secretary of State for Transport has upheld the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority's refusal to vary the British Airways' license, and has turned down an appeal by Virgin.
-- A renewed commitment to keep British Airways ahead in quality customer service was pledged by the airline with the launch of "Managing Winners", the new management program, and "Winners", the new corporate event.
