BRITISH AIRPORTS PURCHASE EGIS EXPLOSIVES DETECTORS

WOBURN, Mass., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Thermedics Inc. (AMEX: TMD) has announced that the BAA plc (formerly the British Airports Authority) has purchased three EGIS(R) explosives detectors to be installed at two different airports. These new instruments, along with two EGIS systems previously ordered, are going to be integrated into an advanced security system for screening checked luggage before loading the aircraft.
The installation of EGIS detectors, in conjunction with advanced X-ray technology, represents the final operational trial of an integrated systems approach.
John W. Wood Jr., president of Thermedics, said, "Our EGIS system was selected for final operational trials after one of the most comprehensive evaluations of new security technology. The UK's equipment choice is sure to influence the other European Community countries, which have been monitoring these tests closely. The decision to use an advanced technology like the EGIS represents a significant step forward in the aviation community's battle against terrorism."
The German government was the first to implement an integrated systems approach to airport security by installing approximately 30 EGIS units at airports throughout Germany for screening carry-on items. The EGIS system utilizes vapor/particle-detection technology and a series of rapid chemical analyses to accurately detect and identify miniscule amounts of explosives. EGIS was developed to provide an instrument that could reliably identify even plastic explosives, which go undetected with conventional X-ray systems.
Thermedics develops, manufactures, and markets explosives- and drug- detection devices, product quality-assurance systems, electronic test instruments, implantable heart-assist devices and other biomedical products, and provides analytical laboratory services. Thermedics is a public subsidiary of Thermo Electron Corporation.
