BRITE VOICE SYSTEMS REPORTS THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

WICHITA, Kan., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Brite Voice Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BVSI) reported a 30 percent increase in revenues for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 1993. Revenues were $11,827,000, compared to $9,076,000 for the like period in 1992. Operating income was $679,000, compared to an operating loss of $1,101,000. Net income was $616,000, or 8 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $683,000, or 9 cents per share, last year.
For the three quarters ended Sept. 30, revenues were $33,913,000, compared to $25,954,000 a year ago, a 31 percent increase. Brite incurred an operating loss of $3,229,000, compared to an operating loss of $3,111,000 last year. There was a net loss of $2,729,000, or 36 cents per share, compared to $1,970,000, or 26 cents per share, in 1992.
On July 30, 1993, Brite consummated its merger with Perception Technology Corp. ("Perception") and issued 3.4 million shares of its common stock in exchange for all of the outstanding shares of Perception common stock. Because the merger was accounted for as a pooling of interests, the consolidated financial statements have been retroactively restated to include the results of Perception for all periods prior to consummation of the merger. The nine months' results for 1993 include a one time charge of $4,600,000 related to the merger, including the costs of the transaction, severance pay, and the estimated costs of integrating the operations of the two companies. The nine months' results for 1992 included a restructuring charge of $850,000, which represented the relocation costs of one of Brite's divisions, severance costs, and the settlement of certain consulting contracts.
Stan Brannan, president and chief executive officer stated, "We are extremely pleased with our third quarter results. We were concerned that the events leading up to the merger, and the subsequent integration activities, would negatively impact third quarter sales. Fortunately, we were able to keep the distraction to a minimum and record a 6 percent increase from second quarter revenues. We have now recorded increases in revenues for five consecutive quarters. Although our nine months' results show an operating loss, they reflect $4.6 million in costs associated with the merger. Excluding these costs, Brite would have shown operating income of approximately $1,371,000."
