BRITAIN/INTERNATIONAL: UK troops kill three militia.

BRITISH forces in Basra killed three insurgents who attacked them with suspected mortar fire after they arrested four militants and seized weaponry, the Ministry of Defence said yesterday.

The British were part of a multinational force carrying out an arrest operation in the south of the city.

"As the troops were extracting from the patrol they came under a number of attacks from small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades/' said Major David GelL a British Army spokesman in Basra.

"At about 5.30am, the patrol was hit by indirect fire, possibly mortars, and militia was seen launching the attack.

"We, in self-defence, hit them and believe we killed the three males."

He said no-one from the multinational force was injured in the attacks and by 6.45am British forces were back at base.

The latest violence is part of an increase in attacks on UK and Iraqi troops in Basra after the killing on Friday of Wissam al-Waili, also known as Abu Qadir, leader of the Mahdi Army militia in Basra.
