BRINKER INTERNATIONAL JOINS FORCES WITH PAC-AM
TO OPERATE CHILI'S RESTAURANTS IN TEN ASIAN COUNTRIES
DALLAS, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Brinker International, Inc. (NYSE: EAT), in its most aggressive international expansion initiative, today reached an agreement with PAC-AM Food Concepts Limited to develop and operate as many as 35 Chili's Grill & Bar restaurants in 10 Asian countries during the next 15 years.
PAC-AM, based in the British Colony of Hong Kong, was formed as a master franchisee for Brinker and has exclusive right to own and subfranchise Chili's restaurants in several Pacific Rim countries, which include Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines and China.
Hin Hiong Khoo, 52, serves as chairman of the board of PAC-AM. Khoo, an international businessman who has offices in the United States and Asia, says he believes joining forces with Brinker gives PAC-AM the strategic edge on the competition in the region's casual dining market.
"We are bringing to Asia a concept that has been acclaimed as the very best in the United States in the casual dining segment," said Khoo. "Chili's Grill & Bar will fulfill a niche for family restaurants in suburban areas throughout the Pacific Rim, a region in which the economy is developing faster than anywhere else in the world.
"From our perspective as the master franchisee, the uniqueness of this transaction is that it will be directed and nurtured by the best team in the business."
PAC-AM's initial plan calls for the construction of 20 Chili's restaurants during an eight-year period. The first restaurants are planned to open in Jakarta, Indonesia, next spring and in Seoul, South Korea, next summer, with an additional unit in each of the two countries later in the year.
The agreement will allow for as many as 35 Chili's restaurants to be developed during the next 15 years, depending on the availability of suitable real estate.
David Wesley, 50, who has been Khoo's business associate for more than 20 years, will serve as president and chief executive officer of PAC-AM. Wesley has spent more than 10 years living in and developing businesses in Pacific Rim countries.
PAC-AM will initially duplicate the atmosphere and menu of American Chili's restaurants, with some adaptations for local tastes and cultural considerations. Khoo expects the entree salads, fajitas and the "Awesome Blossom" -- a fresh whole onion sliced to blossom, hand battered, fried and served with Chili's seasoned sauce -- to appeal to local consumers.
Menu items will be prepared daily using fresh ingredients, as in the United States. All restaurant personnel will be trained under the same standards as their American counterparts.
PAC-AM's venture represents the first time Chili's restaurants have been built outside the Western Hemisphere. John Miller, Brinker's vice president of franchise, says Khoo and Wesley bring a vast amount of cultural and practical experience to the Asian venture.
"There is quite a breadth of knowledge in a broad range of different businesses, in trading, in finance, in legal work, and also in restaurant development," said Miller.
"From a consumer's point of view, PAC-AM thoroughly understands the American restaurant market and the Asian market and is especially qualified to merge Asian cultures with American institutions."
Brinker International, which is based in Dallas, has 315 restaurants in 39 states and two countries. The company's portfolio of four restaurant concepts -- Chili's Grill & Bar, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Grady's American Grill and Spageddies -- is projected to generate $780 million in systemwide revenues in the 1993 fiscal year. By fiscal 1995, Brinker International's stated goal is to achieve annual revenues in excess of $1 billion.
