BRINKER INTERNATIONAL ELECTS NEW CEO AT SPECIAL MEETING

DALLAS, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron McDougall, president and chief operating officer of Brinker International, Inc. (NYSE: EAT), was elected chairman and chief executive officer Sunday by the board of directors, effective immediately.
The election was held during a specially called meeting at the company's headquarters in Dallas.
Norman Brinker remained unconscious in stable condition Sunday night in the intensive care unit of a West Palm Beach hospital, three days after being injured during a polo accident at the Palm Beach Polo Club.
McDougall, a close associate of Mr. Brinker's for nearly 20 years, has been president and COO of Brinker International for the past seven years.
"The thoughts and prayers of all 35,000 Brinker International employees are with Norman and his family," McDougall said.
McDougall has been a driving force and vital part of the management team responsible for guiding Brinker International's restaurants to the top of the casual dining segment. The company has been recognized as one of the best managed, most innovative and progressive in the industry.
"Norman and our top-level managers just completed a series of meetings in which they confirmed the strategic vision of the corporation," said McDougall. "Everyone was excited about our direction and pleased with the company's long-term growth potential.
"During the past 18 years we have developed an experienced management team that provides a solid foundation to successfully build for the future."
Donald E. Godwin, spokesperson for the Brinker family, expressed the family's strong support for the action taken Sunday by the board. Godwin, a longtime friend and attorney for the Brinkers, said Nancy Brinker, Mr. Brinker's wife, fully supports the board's decision and stands behind the management of the company as it goes forward.
"Her total energies and those of the Brinker family can now focus on Norman," Godwin said. "She is grateful for Norman and Ron's long-term business relationship and their similar business and personal values."
Brinker International currently has 339 restaurants in 41 states and in Canada and Mexico. The company's portfolio of four restaurant concepts -- Chili's Grill & Bar, Romano's Macaroni Grill, Grady's American Grill and Spageddies -- is projected to generate $780 million in systemwide revenues in the 1993 fiscal year. By fiscal 1995, Brinker International's stated goal is to achieve annual revenues in excess of $1 billion.
