West Eugene Wetlands inspire artist's show

Video artist, musician and composer Daniel Heila combines digital video and live structured musical improvisation on flute, guitar and voice-over. He will present a three different pieces focused on the West Eugene Wetlands at 7 p.m. today at the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts, 110 W. Broadway.

The piece "Distant Progress" examines "denizens and patrons of the preserve ... against the background of development."

"Distant Trio" features bird imagery and "Distance Airborne" looks at animals and machines over the wetlands.

Tickets are $5 or $3 for students and DIVA members.

Eugene film festival

issues call for volunteers

The Eugene International Film Festival is still a ways out - the burgeoning festival is scheduled for Oct. 4-6 - but organizers are already recruiting volunteers.

Volunteers can earn credits used for everything from film screenings to workshops to T-shirts and posters.

Free family film festival continues next week

Regal Cinemas' Free Family Film Festival continues this week with showings of the G-rated film "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit" and the PG-rated movie "Garfield: A Tail Of Two Kitties."

Screenings are at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Valley River Center Stadium 15, 500 Valley River Center.

The series continues through mid-August. Upcoming films include "Charlotte's Web" (G) and "Monster House" (PG) on July 24-25, and "Everyone's Hero" (G) and "Barnyard" (PG) on July 31 and Aug. 1.
