Foul play seen in woman's death

PACOIMA -- Detectives suspect foul play in the death of a 25-year-old woman who was found dead in her bedroom, authorities said Friday.

Janet Martinez was discovered Thursday inside her home in the 10500 block of Telfair Avenue. Her parents had reported her missing Tuesday when she failed to pick up her two children from a baby sitter's home.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. Homicide detectives are seeking her husband, Francisco Moncadaleon, 29, as a person of interest.

The 5-foot-7-inch, 210-pound Mexican national also known as Francisco Moncada, Edgar Avila Zamora and Francisco Julian Mocada Leon has not been seen for several days, and police fear for his well-being.

Anyone with information can call detectives at (818) 834-3115 or (877) 429-3855.

Man is arrested in dog poisoning

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- A 54-year-old man was arrested after a neighbor recovered meatballs with rat poison, aspirin and a cholesterol-reducing drug that had been thrown into her backyard, apparently to harm her dog, authorities said Friday.

The Animal Cruelty Task Force served a search warrant Tuesday at the home of Lawrence ``Larry'' Rothfork in the 6100 block of Riverton Avenue and found the poisons and five handguns, including a semiautomatic handgun, which were confiscated, according to the city's Department of Animal Services.

Rothfork had been involved in a dispute with the neighbor about her dog, a boxer named Indo, and its alleged barking for years.

For a couple of days in December, Indo was lethargic and experiencing paralysis in her left hind leg. Then Indo's owner found the meatballs. She had also found hot dogs in her yard.

The Animal Cruelty Task Force served the search warrant and had the meatballs tested.

Antonio to back Cardenas' bid

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will endorse San Fernando Valley Councilman Tony Cardenas in his bid for re-election today at a campaign kickoff in Pacoima.

Cardenas was a state assemblyman before being elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2003. In 2001, Cardenas supported James Hahn over Villaraigosa, but Cardenas switched teams and backed Villaraigosa in 2005.

Cardenas is being challenged by businessman James ``Jamie'' Cordaro, probation Officer Eric Dwight Rothenay, businessman Candido Marez and engineer Lisa Martellaro-Palmer.
