Teenage boys found

after mushroom hunt

DOUGLAS COUNTY - Two teenage boys missing for several hours while on a mushroom-picking trip Saturday were found safe about 7:15 p.m.

Sheriff's deputies from Lane and Douglas counties were searching south of Florence on Saturday evening for the teens, after the father of one of the boys called 911 from a Florence store because he could not find them, according to dispatchers from both counties.

The father told dispatchers he hadn't seen the pair since about 4 p.m. and grew concerned because it was getting dark and they were not dressed for cold weather, a Lane County dispatcher said.

The father said he believed the youths were in Douglas County and called for police help about 5:30 p.m., the dispatcher said.

One deputy from each agency assisted the father in looking for the boys Saturday evening.

A sheriff's dispatcher said the boys were found "in the brush" in Douglas County.

Drain motorcyclist found dead in ditch by cyclists

YONCALLA - A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Drain was found dead in a ditch Friday along Hayhurst Road, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded after two bicyclists spotted the body and called for help about 11:30 a.m., the sheriff's office said in a news release. Deputies identified the body as Christopher Aaron Fulton.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Fulton was northbound when he failed to negotiate a right turn and traveled off the road, through some brush and small trees, coming to rest in the ditch, the release said.

Investigators said he probably had been wearing a helmet, but it came off during the crash.

The time of the accident has not been established, but Fulton's family said they saw him Thursday afternoon, the news release said.

WILLAMETTE PASS - A La Pine man injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 58 about 3 miles west of Willamette Pass on Oct. 30 has died of his injuries, Oregon State Police have learned.

Two other people died, and another sustained serious injuries in the accident, which happened on an icy section of highway.

Kenneth Babcock, 49, died Thursday at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Laverne Wheeler, 58, of Cottage Grove, died at the scene of the accident, as did La Pine resident James Lester, 34. Patrick Barker, 48 and also of La Pine, remains in serious condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.

About 10 a.m. on Oct. 30, Wheeler, driving an eastbound 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck towing a travel trailer, crossed the center line into the westbound lanes and hit the passenger side of a 1997 Dodge utility truck owned by Midstate Electric Co-op and driven by Babcock.
