New traffic signal to be activated on Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD - A new traffic signal at Gateway Street and Crossroads Center is scheduled to be activated between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The signal is being installed to improve traffic safety at the busy intersection. Motorists should expect delays Wednesday morning while work crews finish installing the signal.

Church hosts forum for 2 judicial candidates

A forum featuring Lane County Circuit Court judge candidates Debra Vogt and Alan Leiman will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive St.

The Lane County Domestic Violence Council is sponsoring the forum.

Registration is this week for alternative school

ELMIRA - Fall registration for West Lane Technical Learning Center will be Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The school, on the back side of the Elmira High School campus at 24936 Fir Grove Lane, provides an alternative to traditional education for students in grades nine through 12. For more information, call 935-2101.

VFW sponsors national essay competition

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring an essay competition, with the top national winner receiving a $10,000 U.S. savings bond.

The contest is open to sixth- through eighth-graders. Entrants are required to write a 300- to 400-word essay on "Citizenship in America."

Students compete at the local VFW post level, and winners advance to district and state contests. Awards are given at each level. The deadline to enter the competition is Nov. 1.
