Blues society meetings to feature local bands

The Rainy Day Blues Society is changing its tune. The member-based promoter of all things bluesy will shift its emphasis during meetings from business to music.

That means when the society meets, you get a free show. The first instance of this new world order is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eugene's newest blues joint, Papa's Soul Food Kitchen, 400 Blair Blvd.

This is a membership meeting, or a good time to become a member. First up is an acoustic set by Adam Scramstad, followed by the RDBS's house band doing an electric set.

Between sets there will be announcements and CD giveaways.

In the future, society members plan to use these meetings as a chance to showcase new local bands.

Hope Festival to raise funds for foster children

Local bands are donating their time to provide eight hours of live music during the Eugene Hope Festival on Saturday.

The festival is designed to raise money for local foster children, many of whom have been separated from parents who are involved with drugs.

The money will go to buying teddy bears for traumatized children, who often have to leave everything they own behind. Older children will receive backpacks filled with school supplies.

The festival is the brainchild of Cindra Madison, who once assumed responsibility for a former family member's baby.

The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Oregon Alliance for Drug Endangered Children. Donations are tax-deductible.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Broadway Plaza, Broadway at Willamette Street. Besides music, the festival will feature kids' booths, raffles, a silent auction and information about foster children.
