Volunteers needed for McKenzie River Cleanup

Whether by boat or by foot, anyone can take part in the annual McKenzie River Cleanup, scheduled for July 15.

The McKenzie River Guides, McKenzie Flyfishers, McKenzie River Trust and the McKenzie Watershed Council all take part in the event that concludes with a barbecue.

The cleanup takes place from 9 a.m. to noon, with the barbecue immediately after and running until 3 p.m. at Hendricks Park.

Participants can walk the river bank or float a section of the river to pick up trash.

To volunteer, call Kate Ferschweiler at the McKenzie Watershed Council at 687-9076 by July 12.

Women's `Dream Big' gathering planned

VENETA - Donna Tusow will speak at the Lane County Women's Connection "Dream Big" gathering to be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 13 at Our Daily Bread Restaurant, 88170 Territorial Road in Veneta.

Tusow will discuss how sometimes our dreams aren't as big as they should be and how disappointments can help us find answers. Harpist Pamela Roberts will provide the music.

For reservations, call 461-9183 or 688-2557 by Thursday. The cost is $7 per person, which includes a dessert and beverage. Seating is limited.

Pair to discuss how they are `living off the grid'

Christine Reising and Colin McCoy will discuss their 30 years of experience "living off the grid" on Wednesday at Books Without Borders.

Reising and McCoy live in handmade solar and wind-powered houses, mill their own timber, as well as use found and reclaimed materials and sustainable agriculture.

Books Without Borders and the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild are sponsoring the free event, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

The bookstore is at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Charnelton Street.

Colombia the focus of talk, slideshow

A talk and slideshow about peace communities and human rights groups in Colombia will be held Thursday on the University of Oregon campus.

Trish Abbott, who has lived and worked in Colombia for several years, will lead the discussion that begins 7 p.m. in 240A McKenzie Hall, on the corner of 12th Avenue and Kincaid Street.

The event is sponsored by the Committee in Solidarity with the Central American People, the Eugene Area Fellowship of Reconciliation and Faith in Action.

Compassionate Friends meeting set for July 11

The Compassionate Friends Support Group will meet July 11 this month because of the Fourth of July holiday.

The group meets at 7 p.m. at PeaceHealth Medical Building, 1162 Willamette St. in Eugene.

The Compassionate Friends is a self-help organization offering support and grief education to those who have experienced the death of a child at any age from any cause.

Expert to share tips for dahlia arrangements

An expert on using dahlias to create unique floral arrangements will share tips at the Lane County Dahlia Society's monthly meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Alfretta Spores, the floral department superintendent of the Lane County Fair, will share her expertise through a hands-on demonstration.

The meeting is at Celeste Campbell Senior Center, 155 High St.
