Jacobs-Strain to play show at Luna tonight
David Jacobs-Strain, that South Eugene High School grad making a name for himself as a blues guitarist and singer, will make a special hometown appearance at Luna today.
Jacobs-Strain moved to Eugene as a kid, first performing at the Oregon Country Fair at age 11. The 2001 South graduate spent some time at Stanford University before deciding to pursue a music career.
About that time, the All Music Guide reviewed his second solo CD, "Stuck on the Way Back."
"David Jacobs-Strain might still be young, but he has a formidable arsenal at his command, with a guitar technique and power that's second to none and a voice that's decades older than his baby face," the review states.
"But once you get past the contrast between his appearance and the fire in his sound, it's apparent you're in the presence of a very talented bluesman, one of the best of a new generation."
The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $16. Luna is at 30 E. Broadway.
to play at Cozmic Pizza
A relatively unknown world beat musician out of the San Francisco Bay area, Hyim, will perform Sunday at Cozmic Pizza.
You can listen to his music at www.hyimvibe.com.
His name means "life" in Hebrew.
And if his list of interests is any indication, he has a full one.
Hyim is a recording artist, composer, poet, producer, playwright and, according to his bio, "a freedom fighter." He grew up in a hippie commune in San Francisco, and has traveled the world picking up influences from hip-hop, Cuban, reggae, pop, rock and jazz.
The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "Hyim is a spellbinding and formidable talent."
The show begins at 7 p.m. The cover is $5.
Cozmic Pizza is at 199 W. Eighth Ave.
