Womenspace benefit features the Ovulators

The Ovulators will headline a benefit concert for Womenspace tonight at Cozmic Pizza in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This all-ages event will begin at 7 p.m. with "That Takes Ovaries," an open mike where women can share their stories of bold, brazen and courageous acts.

The open mike will be followed by the Ovulators, the Eugene-based all-girl glam rock band that sounds like the offspring of David Bowie and the Pixies.

Cozmic Pizza is at 199 W. Eighth Ave. Admission is free, but donations will be collected for Womenspace.

Portland performers play on Elliott Smith tribute

The Decemberists, Helio Sequence, Swords and Sean Croghan are among the Portland artists slated to appear in an Elliott Smith tribute album.

"To: Elliott From: Portland" will be released on Expunged Records on Feb. 7, 2006.

Smith, who was found stabbed to death in his Los Angeles apartment on Oct. 21, 2003, was a longtime fixture on the Portland scene. His work as a solo artist and with his band Heatmiser drew the attention of Gus Van Sant, who used Smith's song "Miss Misery" in "Good Will Hunting." The song earned an Oscar nomination for best original song.
