Kingsford warehouse hit by 2nd smoldering fire

SPRINGFIELD - Fire ignited in a charcoal briquette factory warehouse on Monday evening, sending smoke billowing across Highway 126.

The smoldering blaze was reported at 6:43 p.m. at the Kingsford plant at 3315 Marcola Road and was still burning at 10 p.m., according to Springfield Fire Department spokesman Mark Walker.

Firefighters were attacking the blaze by using forklifts to break apart smoldering piles of briquettes, Walker said.

It was the second fire at the warehouse in the past 10 days. Springfield firefighters put out a similar fire there on July 23.

The cause of the fire was unknown, said Walker, who expected firefighters to be on the scene through early morning. There were no injuries, he said.
