13-year-old from Canada killed when ATV crashes

DUNES CITY - A 13-year-old boy from British Columbia died Friday when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding crashed and landed on him in the sand dunes behind Woahink Lake RV Park, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

Drew Derek Dickson of Abbotsford was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:11 p.m. by paramedics from Siuslaw Fire and West Lane Ambulance.

Investigators said Dickson was speeding on unfamiliar terrain known locally as the Red Buggy Area - factors that could have contributed to the crash. He was wearing the appropriate safety gear, including a helmet.

Witnesses saw Dickson summit a 100-foot-tall sand hill known as "Slip Face." As he descended a 25-foot drop-off, his 2005 Yamaha Grizzly flipped and rolled over onto him. People in the area pulled the ATV off the teen and performed first aid until medics arrived, the sheriff's office said.
