Bethel schools deputy named interim chief

The Bethel School Board voted unanimously to name Tim Keeley interim superintendent in a special meeting Monday.

Keeley has been Bethel's assistant superintendent since 1988 and will take over the district's top job for a year as the board launches its effort to replace Steve Hull, who in April accepted a superintendent position in Colorado.

"With you, we have our best chance to get there," board member Keith Andersen told Keeley.

Andersen gave praise to the other two applicants - Drew Braun and Joel Bradford - but said it was Keeley's belief that the district's biggest need was to rebuild a sense of team that won over board members.

Braun is the director of instruction for Bethel schools, and Bradford teaches math and science at Cascade Middle School.

Keeley holds two advanced degrees from the University of Oregon: a master's in special education and a doctorate in education policy and management.

Keeley and his wife, Eileen McNutt, have three children in Bethel schools.

Report of check forgery leads to chase, arrest

A report of check forgery at a Gateway area store led to a police chase that culminated in a crash and an arrest at 14th and G streets in Springfield on Monday.

No one was injured when the driver rammed the driver's side door of another car as he attempted to turn west from 14th Street onto G Street about 11 a.m., Springfield police Sgt. Mike McCarthy said.

A patrol officer already had stopped chasing the suspect when the crash happened, but a police detective was near the crash site and tackled the driver after a brief foot chase, McCarthy said.

Richard William Molnar, 35, was arrested on a warrant stemming from methamphetamine and unlawful weapon possession charges. Police filed 10 new charges, including hit-and-run, reckless endangering, auto theft and forgery.
