Ideas wanted for Acorn Park improvements
Acorn Park neighbors are invited to an idea-sharing workshop on how to improve the park on Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The 2.5-acre park is located between Acorn Park Road and Buck Street, south of 14th Avenue. The park now includes a play structure, basketball court and hard-surfaced paths.
Neighborhood parks typically do not have restrooms, off-street parking, organized sports, skate parks, dog off-leash areas or other facilities that would attract visitors from a greater distance than the park's service area, about a half mile.
Improvements are possible because of funding through a federal Community Development Block Grant. Construction may begin as early as this summer.
The workshop is at the McCornack Elementary School library at 1968 Brittany St., Eugene. For more information or to give input, call 682-4914 or e-mail carolyn.j.weiss@ ci.eugene.or.us.

Docks to be repaired
at Dexter Lake
LOWELL - A number of docks on Dexter Lake are going to be taken out of commission after the Memorial Day weekend while repairs are done on them.
The work won't start until Tuesday, said Kees Ruurs of the Oregon State Parks department. The docks adjacent to the boat landings at the Dexter, Lowell and Winberry recreation areas will be taken out for work.
The boat ramps will remain open.
Ruurs said the work will take less than two weeks, and the docks should be back in the water for the weekend of June 11-12.
New novelist holds
A Lane County government employee has turned novelist, with publication of her first novel, `Faithful to My Heart.'
The book, written by Linda Wagner, a researcher and evaluator for the county's Department of Youth Services, interweaves an examination of lesbian relationships with adventure as a sea cruise goes awry, marooning a shipful of vacationers on an isolated island inhabited by a mysterious population.
Some of Wagner's co-workers have organized a "get to know the author" event and book signing at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Oregon Electric Station at 27 E. Fifth Ave., Eugene. Her book has been published through Infinity Publishing.com.
