Property taxes can be dropped in ballot boxes

Lane County ballot drop box locations will be available for third-trimester tax payments beginning today.

Lane County election `drive-up' drop boxes are usually made available for each trimester property tax payment a few days before the due date. Because of the special election Tuesday, all ballot drop boxes will be available for third-trimester property tax payments.

Although ballot boxes will be open until 8 p.m. Tuesday, the third-trimester tax payments are still due, according to state law, by Monday at midnight.

If property owners choose to mail payments, they must be postmarked by midnight Monday. Post offices in outlying areas often bring the mail to a central location for postmarking, so the postmarks may not be applied on the day mailed. Interest is calculated on past due amounts one day following the respective due date of each installment.

While most drop boxes are open 24 hours, some locations have limited hours. Information on drop box locations, maps and hours are available online at elections/dropoff.htm.

Payments are also accepted at the tax payment counter on the lower level of the Public Service Building, 125 E. Eighth Ave., Eugene, weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. People with questions regarding their account can call 682-4321 during those hours.

Property taxes are payable in three installments: The first trimester payment was due Nov. 15, the second was due Feb. 15 and the third is due Monday.

For more information, call the assessment and taxation department at 682-6798.
