Group plans war protest;

location to be disclosed

A local group is planning to protest the war in Iraq today, but it won't disclose the location until an hour before the demonstration.

In messages sent to local media this week, the unnamed group said it had worked to end the war through "conventional legal methods such as campaigning, voting, writing letters, legal demonstrations and prayer to no avail." The group said the "direct action of civil disobedience" will occur at 11:30 a.m. today, on the eve of the second anniversary of the war.

"We recognize we may be arrested, and we are prepared to do so," the group said in its message.

Eugene police have spoken with the organizers and will have additional officers on bicycles to monitor the protest, police spokeswoman Pam Olshanski said. Olshanski said police do not know where the demonstration will take place.

Smith to visit troops

in Iraq, Afghanistan

WASHINGTON - Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., will travel to Iraq and Afghanistan next week to visit Oregon soldiers, review security forces and meet with top leaders, his office said Thursday.

``Iraq and Afghanistan are at critical junctures, and Oregonians are on the front lines helping those nations stabilize and move forward,'' Smith said in a statement. `I want to ensure the well-being of our troops and make sure they are provided with the resources needed to accomplish their important mission.''

Before entering Iraq, Smith will tour a special forces training facility in Amman, Jordan, and talk with Jordanian leaders. He then will travel to Kirkuk, Iraq, where he will visit Oregon soldiers and meet with the commanding general of the multinational forces.
