Driver killed when car

crashes into EWEB truck

SPRINGFIELD - A Blue River man died Thursday after the car he was driving crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Eugene Water & Electric Board utility truck nearly head on.

Oregon State Police had not released the name of the 82-year-old man, pending notification of his family.

He was driving a 2001 Dodge sedan west on Highway 126 East about a half mile east of Springfield when it drifted across the centerline and struck a 1999 Ford utility truck about 8 a.m.

The Blue River man was extricated by fire personnel and taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he later died.

He was wearing a seat belt and his air bag had deployed.

The driver of the utility truck, Robert S. Cover, 41, of Eugene, was also wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries that were treated at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. His passenger, Bobby W. Hardin, 60, of Springfield, also was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The highway was closed for about two hours. The state Department of Transportation assisted at the scene, along with Springfield and McKenzie fire crews. The crash is being investigated by Springfield-based state troopers.

Junction City man gets 100 months for rape

A Junction City man, Walter Matthew Daniels, was sentenced Monday to more than eight years in prison for a rape and burglary involving an Elmira girl on Nov. 20.

Daniels, 39, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, which carries a mandatory 100-month sentence under the state's Measure 11 sentencing law.

Lane County sheriff's investigators said Daniels entered an outbuilding that had been converted to contain a bedroom. The girl was sleeping when he attacked her, they said.

Under Measure 11, the sentence cannot be reduced for any reason.
