Former OUS chancellor accepts job at UTEP

The former chancellor of the Oregon University System, who resigned last year amid a management overhaul, has taken a job at the University of Texas.

Richard Jarvis is the new provost at the 19,000-student University of Texas at El Paso and is due to start his job Jan. 12, a University of Texas spokeswoman said.

Jarvis, 55, was chancellor of Oregon's seven-university system for less than two years before Gov. Ted Kulongoski dismissed most of the state's Board of Higher Education members.

Several months later, as the newly-appointed board set out to reshape the chancellor's role, Jarvis resigned - accepting a severance package worth roughly $180,000.

George Pernsteiner, a former Portland State University administrator, was appointed in June as interim chancellor.
