for FOOD for Lane County
FOOD for Lane County's gardens provide thousands of pounds of fresh produce each year for needy community members, but are themselves at risk.
The food bank only has enough money to fund the gardens through the end of the year. After that, their future is uncertain.
Volunteers hoping to save the program have organized the first of several fund-raisers, the Earth Friendly Gardens Tour to the two of the three gardens.
The Saturday event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and master gardeners will be on hand to discuss composting, soil preparation, winter gardening and best organic practices.
At the Youth Farm - at 705 Flamingo Ave. off Game Farm Road in Springfield - teens will lead tours showcasing the lessons they've learned from working the three-acre site. Produce will be for sale. At the Grassroots Garden at 1465 Coburg Road in Eugene, cut flowers will be sold.
Admission for the event is $10 and tickets can be purchased at FOOD for Lane County on Bailey Hill Road, at Down to Earth retail stores and at the gardens on Saturday.
