 BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE-UNITED RUBBER WORKERS DISPUTE SETTLED
WASHINGTON, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernard E. DeLury, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, announced today that Bridgestone/Firestone and Local 1005 of the United Rubber Workers Union, AFL-CIO, reached an agreement which was ratified by union members on June 17.
Commissioners Robert Bowling and Ed Sedlmeier of the FMCS Nashville and Knoxville Field Offices were instrumental in bringing the parties together to deal with several issues that caused a 17-day work stoppage from May 1 through May 17. The 1,100 workers returned to work on May 18, under a contract extension agreement while negotiations continued.
DeLury stated, "Commissioners Bowling and Sedlmeier deserve special praise for their work with labor and management representatives in dealing with a dispute involving some of the more complex issues in contemporary labor relations.
