BRESLER'S INDUSTRIES ACQUIRES 65-UNIT CALIFORNIA-BASED PENGUIN'S PLACE YOGURT CHAIN

CHICAGO, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Bresler's Industries, Inc., a multiple-chain franchisor based in Chicago, has acquired the Penguin's Place Yogurt Shops from Penguin's Place, Inc., of Thousand Oaks, Calif. The 65-unit Penguin's chain, which began operations in 1983, is today regarded as one of the premier frozen yogurt and dessert chains on the west coast. The acquisition is the third in three years by Bresler's Industries, Inc.
Bresler's has plans to expand the number of Penguin's stores in California in 1994 and beyond in high-profile retail locations, and to explore expansion in other areas of the country.
"We're confident that Penguin's outstanding reputation and consumer brand awareness, paired with their commitment to providing quality products and service, will complement the current philosophy and direction of Bresler's Industries," said David Lasky, president of Bresler's.
To broaden consumer appeal and to add more variety to its shops, Penguin's will roll out new product lines, such as the new premium ice creams currently being introduced. The acquisition also will offer Penguin's franchisees access to valuable Bresler's resources, including proven training and customer service philosophies and techniques.
Bresler's expertise in introducing new products will be a major benefit to Penguin's. In the more than 30 years Bresler's has been in the ice cream and yogurt business, the company has consistently expanded its product line in response to changing consumer demands. The company was the first major ice cream chain to permanently add yogurt to their existing menu, as well as the first to add a sugar-free, no-fat yogurt.
The Penguin's product line features Penguin's yogurt, considered the favorite of yogurt consumers, as well as a no-fat yogurt and Slim Penguins, a no-fat, 10-calorie offering. In addition, Penguin's offers popular specialty and sundae items, as well as the most complete dessert topping bar in the industry. At six feet long and with more than 40 selections, Penguin's topping bar set the standard for the rest of the industry.
"We expect Penguin's to retain its current base of loyal customers, while at the same time to reach out to new customers by offering quality products and

service wherever the demand exists," said Mike Rapaport, general manager of the new Penguin's program.
The addition of Penguin's is a significant step in Bresler's corporate strategy to grow by acquisition, as well as to grow its established operations such as Bresler's Ice Cream & Yogurt Shops.
With the addition of Penguin's, the Bresler's Industries family expands to more than 300 stores, including Bresler's Ice Cream & Yogurt Shops, located in more than 30 states nationwide; Larry's Ice Cream & Yogurt Parlours of Florida; Cafe Bresler's gourmet eating shops, located primarily in the Midwest; and Pro-Portion Cafes healthy fare dining of Long Island, N.Y.
