BRENDLE'S ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER RESULTS

 ELKIN, N.C., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Brendle's Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: BRDLQ) announced today first quarter results for FY 1994 were a net loss of $4.6 million for 43 stores vs FY 1993 first quarter losses of $6.9 million for 51 stores. These results are a $2.3 million improvement over last year and exceed the business plan goals by $700 thousand. Sales for first quarter of FY 1994 were $33.3 million vs sales of $42.3 million for first quarter of FY 1993.
 Brendle's also announced that comparable stores sales for the month of May were 4.0 percent ahead of last year. "This is the first month since August of 1990 that Brendle's comparable store sales have been up over the previous year and breaks a string of declines that has lasted for 34 months. We are continuing to work toward a successful turn- around which began four months ago and is gaining momentum. Our loyal base of customer families are again making Brendle's their retailer of choice," reported Doug Brendle, chairman of the board and CEO.
