BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITY ORDERS ITS FIRST CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER
First Cray Research System Installed In South America
EAGAN, Minn., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today that the Federal University of the Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), is installing a CRAY Y-MP 2E supercomputer at the university's new computer center in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. This installation marks the first Cray Research system in South America. A CRAY Y-MP4 system was installed in November 1991 at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico's (UNAM) new supercomputer center in Mexico City (Central America).
The CRAY Y-MP 2E system will allow university researchers to expand their computational research in mathematics, engineering, chemistry, and astronomy.

The system will also be shared with other Brazilian universities through a nationwide network.
"After researching all the available supercomputers, we decided that Cray Research was the best integrated system for our academic needs," said Dr. Kepler Oliveira, general director of the UFRGS supercomputer center.
As part of this order, the university has licensed two unique Cray Research software products: UniChem, and Multipurpose Graphics System (MPGS). UniChem is an interactive software environment for chemistry applications. MPGS is a post-processing and visualization software tool for engineering problems.
"We are very pleased to have been selected by UFRGS as their vendor for supercomputing technology," said Carlos Marino, general manager, Latin American operations for Cray Research. "This order from the university is an example of the leadership steps that Brazil is taking to enhance their research and development infrastructure to compete in global markets. Technological investments in high-performance computers are key to enhancing academic programs to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers. We feel confident that other Brazilian and Latin American universities and research centers will follow UFRGS' leadership and acquire new technologies as they establish international cooperative research programs."
Cray Research has 304 systems installed worldwide, of which 48 systems are installed at academic institutions.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
