BRAUNS FASHIONS CORPORATION IMPLEMENTS NEW MIS SYSTEM

MINNEAPOLIS, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Brauns Fashions Corporation (NASDAQ: BFCI), a specialty retailer of women's apparel, today announced it has completed successful implementation of a new Management Information System (MIS) that will enable the company to better track and analyze its sales and flow of merchandise.
"We needed a new information system that would allow us to be competitive and to grow as a company. It had to be flexible enough to meet our particular needs as a specialty retailer, both now and in the future," said Nicholas Cook, president and chief executive officer. "This system does it all."
The new system utilizes an IBM AS 400 Model E45 computer and a customized software package from Retail Interact of California. It has taken more than two years to plan, develop and test the system. "We started with a software package and, under the leadership of IBM, modified it extensively to fit our particular requirements," said R. Philip Lindley, vice president of MIS.
A key feature of the new software program is inventory profiling which transcends traditional retail departmental classifications (such as dresses, tops, bottoms and accessories) and permits detailed analysis by additional categories such as color groupings, size, style, seasonality or placement of merchandise in the store. Each profile group can include items from several of the traditional merchandise classes. This profiling feature also permits analysis of individual store performance by categories such as size, type or geographic region. Store and merchandise profile groups can be ranked according to various features such as sales performance, gross margins and percentage sell through.
The new system converts a batch method of reporting to a sophisticated, interactive on-line environment. Senior management as well as buyers, allocators and distribution personnel will have instant access to critical information, when they need it. This will facilitate faster response to changing fashion trends and specific store needs.
"The new computer system will enable us to have the right merchandise in the right stores at the right time," said Ted Manley, senior vice president and general merchandise manager. "We will be able to make better, quicker and more accurate decisions about buying, allocating, distribution and promotional events. We can be more responsive to our customers and more competitive through faster turnover of merchandise and lower markdowns."
