BRADLEES REPORTS JULY SALES

BRAINTREE, Mass., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Bradlees, Inc. (NYSE: BLE) today reported sales of $117 million for the four weeks ending July 31, 1993, 9 percent above the prior year. Sales in comparable stores (those open a full fiscal year) were up 6 percent compared with last year.
Year-to-date sales have increased 3 percent from the previous year, and sales in comparable stores have improved 2 percent.
The company's sales were sluggish in May and June due to continued soft consumer demand and cool spring weather, but improved significantly in July due to the unusually hot weather, increased promotional activity and accelerated clearance markdowns. The company expects gross margins for its Second Quarter to be lower than last year and, consequently, the Second Quarter loss is expected to be $2 to $3 million greater than last year's Second Quarter pro forma loss.
Bradlees, Inc. operates 126 discount department stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Bradlees' common stock is listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BLE."
