BP DENIES REPORTS OF CUSIANA WELL CLOSINGS
CLEVELAND, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- David Harding, chief executive of

BP Exploration for Latin America, today denied widely circulated reports that the Colombian government had suspended its operations in the Cusiana region for environmental reasons.
Various wire service reports circulated Monday afternoon stating BP and its partners in some Colombian exploration -- Triton Energy and Total -- were, quote, "violating rules designed to protect the environment." The report went on to say two sites operated by BP had already been closed down, and that the British government had called upon BP to take steps to prevent pollution and observe international norms covering oil exploration.
Harding said that there was no change in the status of any of his operations since the visit to the area last week by Prime Minister of Great Britain John Major together with the President of Colombia, Cesar Gaviria, and that at the present time, seven rigs were operating normally. It was untrue that two rigs had been closed down or that the British government had made any approach to the company.
A report had appeared in a Colombian newspaper this morning which had quoted various remarks said to have been made by the Colombian Minister of Health, but Harding was unaware of the veracity of the report. He said that BP had not been contacted by the Ministry of Health or any other Colombian government agency with a threat to close down its entire operations, and he was seeking to have the matter investigated at a high level to clarify the situation. There is no question of widespread pollution surrounding any of our sites in Colombia, said Harding.
