BP CHAIRMAN ANNOUNCES $138 MILLION PROJECT AT TOLEDO REFINERY
TOLEDO, Ohio, Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- BP Chairman Robert Horton today broke ground at the BP Oil Toledo Refinery for a new $138 million diesel hydrotreater unit. Horton announced, "This project is the single largest modernization project BP has undertaken at any United States refinery. This new unit will significantly reduce sulfur content in diesel fuel that is produced at both BP refineries in Ohio, Lima and Toledo. The new unit allows BP to meet the new regulations of the Federal Clean Air Act of 1990 which takes effect on Oct. 1, 1993."
BP said there are many beneficiaries of this project. First, the introduction of the low sulfur diesel fuel will result in less exhaust emissions, thereby improving the environment. BP is reducing, by 10 times, the amount of sulfur that is currently allowed for diesel fuel. Secondly, during the construction phase of this project, more than 400 jobs will be created, resulting in a $20 million boost to the Toledo economy. Construction is scheduled to begin in March with a completion date of June 1993. Finally, this new unit will strengthen BP's position in the Ohio marketplace by allowing BP's Ohio refineries to produce cleaner fuels that will be required by law.
Horton said, "The diesel hydrotreater project signals, in a significant way, a path forward demonstrating our commitment to our Ohio refining system, its employees and to the people of Ohio. The Lima and Toledo refineries, which are now joined, are the cornerstones for us in the United States and have been strong contributors to our success."
