BOYS' BASKETBALL: MOORPARK STAYS PERFECT WITH POOL-PLAY VICTORY.

The Moorpark High boys' basketball team remained undefeated with a 65-58 victory over L.A. Marshall in pool play at the La Canada/St. Francis tournament Friday night.

Moorpark (6-0), paced by Todd Tomlinson's 26 points, overcame a nine-point second-quarter deficit and held off a late rally by Marshall (1-7) at La Canada High to improve to 2-0 in pool play.

With the Musketeers clinging to a 49-48 lead in the fourth quarter, Tomlinson hit a 3-point basket and a Ryan Moser scored on a layup on consecutive possessions for a 54-48 Moorpark lead with 4:34 left.

The Musketeers, who trailed 24-15 midway through the second quarter, extended their lead to 59-51 on a backdoor layup by Ryan Dabbs off an assist from Tomlinson with 2:34 to play.

Tomlinson, a 6-1 senior guard, was one of three Moorpark players in double figures. Ryan Dabbs scored 12 and Jeff Illions had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Musketeers, attempting to continue their turnaround from an 11-15 record last year, will play Glendale on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis to determine the top entry in the regional semifinals of the 17-team tournament.

In other La Canada tournament games Friday:

Glendale 76, Steveston (Canada) 38: The Dyanamiters (5-3) improved to 2-0 in pool play against Steveston (7-6) behind 23 points from Gilbert Yousefian and 22 points from Tomik Iranosian. Yousefian connected on three 3-point baskets and Iranosian had five steals. Vartan Amayakyan had 10 rebounds and Eddie Karibyan six assists for Glendale.

La Canada 79, Prince of Wales (Canada) 41: Eleven players scored for the winning Spartans (6-2), led by sophomore center Greg Gaudino with 11 points and nine rebounds. Mark Moore and Dan Niemann added 10 points each for La Canada, which plays Buena (Ariz.) tonight in the second round of pool play.

In the Crescenta Valley tournament:

Oak Bay 46, Poly 44: The Canadian team overcame a 16-10 first-quarter Poly lead in winning the championship game and improving to 13-0. Mike Mgdesyan led Poly with 20 points, while Jose Rodriguez added six steals, Julius Robert 11 rebounds and Sef Vargas nine rebounds for the Parrots (4-6).

In other Crescenta Valley tournament games:

Crescenta Valley 82, Canoga Park 48: James Jenkins had 20 points and 16 rebounds and Jimmy Goffredo, Mark McCauley and Jeff Myers added 11 points each to lead the Falcons (9-2), whose only loss was to tournament champion Oak Bay.
