BOY SCOUTS COLLECT 639 TONS OF FOOD IN ONE DAY

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Members and volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America scouted neighborhoods across the state of Florida on Saturday and collected 639.5 tons of food for Scouting For Food, the Boy Scouts annual Good Turn project. All of the food has been donated to local food banks in the cities where it was collected. The statewide goal was 600 tons.
"This is the second year we created a unified effort for Scouting For Food across the state of Florida," said John Akerman, scout executive for the Southwest Council of Boy Scouts in Fort Myers. "Together, we collected enough food for 853,000 meals in one day. We are very pleased with the efforts of the scouts and the community."
This is the sixth year of Scouting For Food. Bags are distributed on one Saturday, and picked up the following Saturday. The Olive Garden Italian Restaurant was the sponsor throughout the state.
