BOY KILLS HIMSELF WITH LION RAMPANT; Scot's flag suicide horror.

A YOUNG man hanged himself with a Scottish flag in a hotel in England, an inquest heard yesterday.

Daniel Ferguson, 20, told staff at the hotel where he was living that he was returning to Scotland for his grandfather's funeral and would be away for a week.

Instead, the labourer, from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, locked himself inside his room, stood on a chair and tied the Lion Rampant around his neck.

He then attached the flag to the door and hanged himself, the inquest in Bournemouth, Dorset, heard.

His body was only found a week later when his brother Stuart rang the hotel to find out where he was.

Joanne Nesbitt, manageress at the Branksome Railway Hotel in Poole, Dorset, told the court Mr Ferguson had been living there for about a month.

She said: "On March 25, he told me his grandfather had died and he was going to Scotland for the funeral.

"We did not see him again after that.

"On March 31, his brother rang. I said I was sorry about their grandfather and he told me that his grandad was alive.

"When I went upstairs to Daniel's room, there was a very bad smell coming from the door.

"I used my master key but I could not get the door open so I called the police."

The inquest heard how police officers forced the door and found Mr Ferguson "obviously dead", with the flag around his neck.

Stuart told the hearing how Daniel had problems since the family moved from Bellshill to Poole in 1997. He said: "I knew he could be down sometimes but I never thought he would do anything like this."

A post mortem confirmed Mr Ferguson, who had taken anti-depressants in the past, had died from hanging.

Bournemouth and East Dorset coroner Sheriff Payne recorded a verdict of suicide.
