BOWLS: Double for Avon Valley.

AVON VALLEY made it a double celebration in the national inter-club championships when their mens team beat Northants-based Desborough 80-70 in the Denny Cup while their mixed side accounted for Rugby Thornfield by 88-73 in the Egham Trophy.

It was mixed fortunes for Valley's home rinks against Desborough with Mick Davis, Richard Greene, Ralph Shakespeare and Trevor Francis winning 32-12 and Karl Finch, Simon Gilbert, Chris Harrison and Andrew Smith losing 26-7.

At the away venue, Mike Cooper, George Moon, Martin Timms and Alan Prew won 21-14 with Mario Rosso, John Strain, Derek Pope and Greg Moon weighed in with a 21-18 success.

Valley's home combinations against Thornfield were Maureen Timms, Jacqui Cook, John Strain and Trevor Francis and Maureen Enston, Eileen Braidwood, Mick Shillington and Greg Moon.

The Francis quartet on 31-10 against Mary Entwhistle, Maureen Edwards, Graham Howes and Mick Woodward and Moon and his partners went down 26- 10 to Aileen Shuttleworth, Janet Pooler, Trevor Wells and Brian Lewer.

At Thornfield, Valley's Alice McPherson, Ruth Carey, Simon Gilbert and Andrew Smith returned a 29-15 winning card against Edith Padimore, Margaret Allen, Darren Ward and Mick Hill.

And Jan Shillington, Di Thurlbeck, Martin Timms and Alan Prew lost 22- 18 against Julie Bott, Heather Mills, John Williams and Dave Sands.

In the second round Denny Plate matches Thornfield beat Lincolnshire club Stamford 88-72, and City of Birmingham registered an 87-62 whitewash defeat against Welford.

The South Warwickshire club gained some consolation when their mixed team were 82-62 Egham Trophy winners against City of Coventry.
