 BOWATER ANNOUNCES KEY PROMOTIONS
 DARIEN, Conn., Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Bowater Incorporated


(NYSE: BOW) has announced several key appointments to its corporate and Pulp and Paper Group staffs reflecting recent retirements and management assignments made in anticipation of the acquisition by Bowater of Great Northern Paper, Inc. later this year.
 Donald J. D'Antuono has been named vice president-corporate development by A.P. Gammie, chairman and chief executive officer, to whom he will report. D'Antuono, formerly vice president-investor relations, succeeds R.W. Toelle who retired from the company earlier in the year. In his new position, D'Antuono will be responsible for the strategic planning function of the corporation, Gammie said.
 Assisting D'Antuono will be Wayne L. Mangels who has been promoted to director-market research for Bowater Incorporated and will relocate to Darien. Since 1975, Mangels has been vice president-market research and communications for the company's Pulp and Paper Group, located in Greenville, S.C.
 Promotions of several manufacturing executives in the company's Pulp and Paper Group have been announced by Dr. David E. McIntyre, vice president-manufacturing operations for the group, to whom most of the executives will report.
 William A. Tuck, Jr. has been named vice president-special projects. Tuck joined Bowater as director of purchasing and most recently has been vice president-manufacturing services. Succeeding Tuck in that position is Dr. Robert A. Moran, previously director of development and planning of the group. Tuck and Moran will continue to be located at the Pulp and Paper Group's Greenville, S.C., headquarters.
 W.P. ("Bob") Gregory will become president and general manager of Great Northern Paper, Inc. and will relocate to Millinocket, Maine, upon the completion of the purchase of an 80 percent interest in Great Northern Paper by Bowater expected later this month. He most recently has been vice president and mill manager of Bowater Incorporated, Southern Division, in Calhoun, Tenn. Succeeding Gregory as vice president and mill manager there is R. Donald Newman, formerly assistant mill manager, according to James A. Breaux, president and general manager of the Southern Division.
 Donald G. McNeil, currently assistant general manager of Bowater Mersey Paper Company, Ltd., Liverpool, Nova Scotia, has been named general manager of that facility succeeding Harold R. Dobson who will remain as president of the subsidiary until his retirement early in 1992.
 With the exception of Gregory whose appointment does not commence until Bowater obtains management control of Great Northern Paper, Inc., all of these assignments have immediate effect.
 Bowater Incorporated is a major manufacturer of newsprint, coated groundwood publication papers, market pulp, and a large converter of communication papers for computer forms and other business applications.
