Byline: Dave Kidd

TWO winters ago, Ben Stokes was arrested for abusive behaviour and obstructing police.

Last winter, he was sent home in disgrace from the second-string England Lions tour to Australia because of persistent late-night drinking.

This winter, Stokes has scored a magnificent century in only his second g y y Test match - a shining light amid the devastation of England's shambolic Ashes campaign.

The 22-year-old scores hundreds, he bowls on the brisk side of fast-medium, he carouses and he raises hell.

These are fine traditions to be upheld among English all-rounders. Sir Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff must be proud of the lad.
