BOSTON TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES NEW PRODUCTS FOR
 WORLDWIDE ENHANCED SERVICES MARKET
LONDON, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Technology (NASDAQ: BSTN) today announced new products, platforms and applications that expand the capabilities of telecommunications companies worldwide to provide enhanced services to their customers. They include a new CO ACCESS(tm) Platform with increased capacity and performance, an extended set of network interfaces, administration and operating support system enhancements, and an expanded portfolio of applications. These new capabilities meet the specific requirements of telephone companies, PTTs, long distance providers, wireless, and other telecommunications service providers who will deploy advanced technology to bring a variety of new revenue-generating applications to residential, business and wireless end user markets.
David S. Gergacz, president and CEO of Boston Technology stated, "These new products and applications enable telephone companies and services providers worldwide to provide state-of-the-art services to their residential, business and mobile customers. Boston Technology's products are designed to provide total enhanced telecommunications solutions on public and private networks. Our new products give service providers an even wider range of service offerings to package and deploy in order to expand their markets and add significant new revenue to their businesses." New CO ACCESS Platform Maintains Industry Capacity Leadership
Boston Technology's new high capacity CO ACCESS 600 system maintains the company's lead in the industry in system capacity, supporting busy hour call profiles and storage requirements of up to 80,000 subscribers and up to 768 voice ports per node. The first deployment of the CO ACCESS 600 system is expected to occur in December 1992.
The CO ACCESS 600 system joins Boston Technology's CO ACCESS platform family, which includes the CO ACCESS 100,200, and 400 systems, to provide the broadest range of scalable platforms in the enhanced services industry, extending from 24 ports to up to 768 ports per node. These platforms utilize a common application set and administration environment ensuring a smooth migration to match a service provider's growing capacity needs in serving a market area. Service providers can maximize their utilization of Boston Technology platforms and lower their costs per subscriber by supporting large subscriber populations and diverse applications on a single platform.
The entire CO ACCESS platform family is designed to provide high performance, to support multiple applications and network capabilities, and to provide total enhanced telecommunication solutions on public and private networks worldwide. The CO ACCESS platforms combine advanced network interfaces and an ongoing commitment to industry standards. The system architecture is based on Boston Technology's open UNIX-based software, providing the flexibility to integrate the most advanced telecommunication and computing technology available. New Network Interfaces For Range of CO ACCESS Platforms
Along with its new platform, Boston Technology has further extended its wide selection of transmission interfaces to the public network for all CO ACCESS platforms. A Jl interface was introduced for deployment of enhanced services in Japan. AN E1 interface is also available for the European, Australian and South American markets, in addition to the T1 Interface for United States networks.
In addition, CO ACCESS platforms can now be integrated with telephone networks through Common Channel Signalling #7 (CCS#7) and Integrated Services Data Network (ISDN) interfaces for Intelligent Network Deployments. With these interfaces, Boston Technology's customers can used advanced network signalling protocols to expand their enhanced services offerings to subscribers. For example, a single universal address could be used to tailor multiple services to a subscriber's unique needs.
For deploying enhanced services in the rapidly growing digital wireless market, Boston Technology announced interfaces with Groupe Speciale Mobile (GSM) networks. This functionality allows deployment of the full range applications available on the CO ACCCESS Platform in cellular networks complying with this standard. Short Message Service (SMS) will be included as a means of sending small text messages to mobile users. This service is specified by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) GSM standards, and features message submission, message control, message routing, service creation, service control provisioning and billing and network management. Operations Support System (OSS) Growth
Boston Technology also announced X.25 transmission of traffic and billing data, expanding the company's leading OSS capabilities. The initial implementation of this functionality is through Bellcore compliant Engineering and Administrative Data Aquisition System (EADAS) and AMA Teleprocessing System (AMATPS) interfaces for transmitting traffic and billing data respectively. These capabilities aid service providers in managing growth in subscriber demand, configuring services, maintaining systems, billing subscribers, and updating subscriber databases. International Language Support for Administration
A new system administration environment enables service providers to perform administration tasks in their own languages. This man made machine interface (MMI) allows the translation of administration screens to multiple languages, such as Italian, Spanish or Portuguese, providing greater flexibility in system maintenance, particularly in the international market. The administration system uses the Motif standard graphical user interface (GUI). Enhanced Speech and Multi-Media Capabilities
A new hardware interface will provide both speech recognition and text-to-speech capabilities. The speech recognition application will be particularly valuable in regions where Touch-Tone(R) service is not widely available because callers can still take advantage of voice messaging or other services by voicing their commands. The text-to- speech application will allow subscribers to receive via voice mail information contained in written documents, such as a fascimile or e- mail message, when they only have a telephone available and not a fax machine or computer. New Applications Geared Toward International Market
Boston Technology introduced new applications to run on the CO ACCESS family of platforms, including its Virtual Mailbox and ThruCall(tm) software applications for call completion, both of which are focused primarily on the international market. These join the company's growing range of enhanced services applications, which include Call Answering, Voice Messaging, Bulletin Board, QuickACCESS (and design)(tm) Automated Attendant, Reminder Services, Fascimile Services, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and more.
With the Virtual Mailbox application, service providers can offer voice mailboxes to customers who do not have permanently assigned telephone lines. They can access the mailboxes using any public or private telephone and can receive messages from family, friends or others for a monthly fee. This application increases revenues for service providers in developing countries where telephone lines are not available, or installation delays are common.
In addition to developing countries, many other regions can use the Virtual Mailbox application to aid disaster recovery situations. For instance, BellSouth recently used the application in the United States to provide voice mailboxes to victims of Hurricane Andrew while telephone lines were down in South Florida.
Boston Technology's ThruCall application allows service providers to capture revenues otherwise lost due to long distance calls which are not completed due to a busy signal or ring-no-answer. The ThruCall software allows callers to leave a message if they reach a busy signal or no answer on a long distance call, and then deliver the message to the called party at a later time. Because more calls are completed, the ThruCall software increases the service provider's long distance turnover. It also helps to decrease network congestion by eliminating constant redialing on the part of the caller.
Other applications for the international marketplace include partitioned mailboxes for business customers. With partitioned mailboxes, businesses can provide private mailboxes for several employees or departments, using only one phone line, providing a cost- effective way for small businesses to have the advantages of call answering, voice messaging and fax mailboxes, and to free their people from having to answer and route phone calls, allowing them to concentrate on other tasks.
Based in Wakefield, Mass., Boston Technology (NASDAQ: BSTN) is the industry's technology leader in providing network-based voice processing systems. The company develops, manufactures, markets and supports enhanced voice processing platforms for Regional Bell Operating Companies, interexchange carriers, long distance providers, cellular and international telecommunications companies.
