BOSTON SCIENTIFIC AND HEWLETT-PACKARD SIGN AGREEMENT

BOSTON SCIENTIFIC AND HEWLETT-PACKARD SIGN AGREEMENT
WATERTOWN, Mass., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX), Watertown, today announced an exclusive agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP), Palo Alto, Calif., to jointly market and sell catheter-based intraluminal ultrasound imaging systems.
Using miniature ultrasound sensors within catheters is a new application of diagnostic imaging. Catheter ultrasound promises to extend the use of medical ultrasound into the realm of procedures such as angioplasty, where ultrasound can safely visualize the delicate walls of coronary and peripheral arteries, and the chambers of the heart. Catheter ultrasound has the potential to enhance "less invasive" surgical procedures by improving the characterization and guiding the treatment of disease.
"Although in investigative stages, the use of tiny ultrasound imaging catheters now allows clinicians to see things not before possible -- detailed areas of the heart's vessels, for example," said Albert S. Kyle, general manager for HP's ultrasound imaging systems business. "Boston Scientific's market presence in catheter systems and concern for customers and patients makes it a natural combination with HP in extending this capability to the cardiac market," he said.
Peter Nicholas, president, co-chairman and CEO of Boston Scientific, said, "Cooperation with HP enables us to expand our position in cardiac applications and the applications of catheter-based imaging systems to other areas of less-invasive surgery, including laparoscopic surgery."
Under the agreement, each company will modify specific products to produce systems that will be jointly marketed for cardiovascular applications. BSC will separately market systems for nonvascular applications.
