BOSTON EDISON TO BRING PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION TO 'COLD SHUTDOWN'
PLYMOUTH, Mass., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Edison Company (NYSE: BSE) today announced that the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station is being brought to "cold shutdown" to repair water leakage in the plant's drywell. While the plant is down, the company said it will also install modifications to the plant's water level instrumentation system. Earlier this year, the NRC had ordered all operators of Boiling Water Reactors similar to Pilgrim's to initiate these repairs during the first "cold shutdown" after July 30, 1993. "Planning for these modifications to our water level instrumentation began several weeks ago," said E. Thomas Boulette, senior vice president. "We are pleased to make these repairs ahead of the NRC schedule and to reconfirm our public commitment to the safe operation of Pilgrim Station." Boulette also announced today that Boston Edison's Board of Directors has authorized a $27 million project, including the award of a contract to General Electric for the fabrication of parts and repair of the plant's low pressure turbine. It is expected that the fabrication of the parts will take up to 18 months with installation to occur during the plant's next refueling outage in April 1995. In the meantime, Pilgrim operators, through the equipment evaluation program established in 1980, will constantly monitor the operating condition of the existing low pressure turbine to ensure its safe operation. The Pilgrim outage was coordinated and scheduled with the New England Power Pool to maintain a sufficient supply of electricity to the region. Pilgrim Station came off the NEPOOL grid at 0400 this morning. -0- 7/22/93 /CONTACT: David Tarantino, Anita Flanagan or Peggy Markson of Boston Edison, 508-224-4803 (24 hours)/ (BSE)
