BOSTON CHICKEN(R) TO OPEN 150TH STORE; ED MCMAHON BECOMES PARTNER IN LARGEST FRANCHISE

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Chicken today announced that it will open its 150th store on Sunday, Aug. 22, at Church Street Station in Orlando, Fla. The opening will be preceded by a private party and press reception at which Ed McMahon, former co-host of "The Tonight Show" and host of the hit television show "Star Search," will cut the ribbon. The party and press reception will be Saturday, Aug. 21, at 5:30 p.m. McMahon's fondness for Boston Chicken, "The freshest thing going," recently led him to become an investor in the company's largest franchisee, R&A Food Services.
Since the first store opened eight years ago in suburban Boston, Boston Chicken has spread its wings into 12 states and the District of Columbia. Boston Chicken had 34 stores in December 1991 and grew to 86 stores by January 1993. The company has almost doubled its size so far this year, and expects to have approximately 240 stores by the end of 1993.
"Our strategy is to dominate local markets and provide our customers with great-tasting, freshly prepared meals," said Warren Ellish, Boston Chicken vice president of marketing.
R&A Food Services, franchise for south and central Florida, was formed in August 1992. They currently operate 13 stores, plan to open 6 more in the next 30 days and expect to have 30 Boston Chicken stores open in Florida by year-end.
"We're very excited about Ed becoming a member of our team and participating with R&A Food Services," said Bob Hartnett, CEO and Sandy Rappaport, president of R&A. "We expect our relationship to be long and productive, and are pleased with Ed's involvement in Boston Chicken."
"I have had plenty of opportunities over the years to invest in restaurants," said McMahon, "but I never found the right one, until now! I like the Boston Chicken concept, the food is great and I believe in the people running the organization."
Boston Chicken, pioneer of the fresh meals to go concept and America's largest rotisserie chain, is a concept as simple as it is unique. Their kitchens are built around ovens and steamers instead of microwaves and fryers. They serve rotisserie roasted chicken that's always fresh (never frozen) and they offer delicious hot and cold side items, like mashed potatoes made from scratch. Boston Chicken provides customers with honest to goodness meals for lunch or dinner.
Boston Chicken's newest outlet is located at Church Street Station, 55 W. Church Street, Orlando. It is open Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-midnight; and Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. The store employs 50 people. Advance orders are welcome; phone 407-422-8744.
