BOSTON ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF FUELS ANALYSIS CORPORATION

NEWTON, Mass., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Advanced Technologies, Inc. of Newton, Mass., has acquired Fuels Analysis Corporation of Santa Ana, Calif., the company announced today. Fuels Analysis Corporation is a manufacturer of opto-electronic devices that measures the specific components of gasoline. These devices are sold to refineries, petroleum distributors, gasoline retailers, and environmental regulatory agencies. Boston Advanced Technologies plans to merge Fuels Analysis Corporation into its subsidiary, PetroSpec Inc., a manufacturer of environmental monitoring equipment for the petroleum industry.
"We are very pleased with this acquisition because the two companies have very complementary technologies and marketing efforts," said Richard Clarke, president of Boston Advanced Technologies. "Fuels Analysis Corporation has close ties to refineries while PetroSpec has concentrated on retail service stations. We believe an integrated approach to the petroleum industry will be very successful."
"Environmental regulations and quality concerns are creating a large demand for accurate fuels analyzers," said Michael Croudace, vice president of Sales & Marketing of Fuels Analysis Corporation. "Together we will be the leading force in this marketplace."
The Clean Air Act is indeed fueling the need for accurate measurement of gasoline components. On November 1st of this year, "Clean Fuel" legislation went into effect in the 39 metropolitan areas that failed to meet the EPA's air quality standards. In these markets, gasoline must be reformulated to contain 2.7 percent of clean burning oxygenates. By January, 1995 approximately one half of the gasoline sold in the U.S. must be reformulated to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Enforcements is carried out by the EPA. If fuel is found that is in noncompliance with these new status, every company along the distribution chain, from the refinery to the retail station, can be held accountable. The company's fuels analyzers, which will be marketed under the PetroSpec name, measure oxygenates virtually instantly. Future analyzers will measure aromatics and octane, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming lab tests.
Boston Advanced Technologies is a developer and manufacturer of optical sensing systems with environmental monitoring applications. The company's PetroSpec Inc. subsidiary markets a wide range of opto- electronic monitoring products to the petroleum industry including leak detectors, inventory gauges, fuels analyzers, and environmental systems controllers.
