BORLAND TO RESELL CONTESSA FRONT-END FOR INTERBASE

BORLAND TO RESELL CONTESSA FRONT-END FOR INTERBASE
BEDFORD, Mass., Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Borland International

(NASDAQ: BORL) and contexture systems today announced a joint marketing agreement in which Borland will market and resell contexture's UNIX-based application development toolset, Contessa. The Contessa development environment provides an OSF/Motif graphical front end to Borland's InterBase relational database management system.
InterBase is an advanced RDBMS that runs across dynamic, distributed networks of multi-vendor workstations and minicomputers. InterBase is a recognized leader in the relational database industry and has pioneered many database technologies including the multimedia "blob" (basic large object) data type, a relational object that allows users to manage large amounts of complex data including text, images, graphics and voice in their databases.
Contessa is an application development environment combining four state-of-the-art technologies. Contessa offers a MOTIF graphical user interface builder with a WYSIWYG editor that allows developers to easily incorporate InterBase "blobs" directly into the application display. Contessa also includes a TCP/IP and DECNET networking component, as well as a data integration interface capable of supporting multiple simultaneous dynamic connections to disparate data sources, real-time feeds, graphics packages, and InterBase. In addition, the product offers a high-level scripting language that provides for unlimited extensibility and object binding.
"A number of our customers have used these two products and have found that they work very well together. Contessa allows developers of varying skill sets to build new MOTIF-based database applications. It brings productivity to the multitude of developers who don't have the time to become experts in some of the more complicated widget building products. Because Contessa is an object-oriented front-end tool, the user can combine scripts directly with objects instead of working with a preset paradigm," said David Root, director of InterBase development at Borland.
"This new partnership strengthens the tie between Contessa and InterBase. Contessa brings to Borland an X-based graphical set of front-end tools to take advantage of InterBase's unique database capabilities. Borland brings to Contessa connectivity to one of the most technically advanced database servers on the market. InterBase is suited to the needs of many of the markets that we target such as manufacturing and financial trading where Contessa's real-time interface capability complements InterBase's high-performance data analysis," said Bill McHale, president of contexture systems.
Contessa is currently available from Borland on the HP/9000 Series 400 and 700, IBM RS/6000, Sun SPARC, DEC Ultrix and HP/Apollo. Development licenses cost $5,000 per developer and run-time licenses cost $500, with volume discounts available.
Contexture systems is a full-service software company headquartered in Boston, Mass. Contessa is distributed throughout Europe via Decalog Informatique, a software and consulting company in Paris.
Borland International, Inc., Scotts Valley, Calif., is a leading developer of object-oriented business software, programming languages and relational database management systems.
