SCOTLAND'S biggest health board were blasted last night over the "bewildering" recruitment of a whisky boss as a top official.

Patient groups and unions condemned the appointment of Ron MacEachran, a former Whyte & Mackay director, as NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's finance director.

Margaret Watt, chief executive of the Scotland Patients Association, said: "I think that he is a totally inappropriate person for that job.

"I am sure a lot of our patients would be bewildered when they hear about his background.

"It flies in the face of the message the government is trying to send with their plans for minimum alcohol pricing."

MacEachran succeeded Douglas Griffin.

NHSGGC's chief executive Robert Calderwood said: "I am delighted to welcome Ron to our team, bringing with him a wealth of experience of financial management at the highest level."
