BOOTS DELIGHTED AT UPTAKE OF PILL.

Byline: KEITH FALKINER

HUNDREDS of women have rushed to get the morning-after pill after a pharmacy began dispensing it.

Boots has revealed women have bought the pill from every one of its 57 stores across the country.

Pharmacists at the store have been providing the emergency contraception since January 12.

Boots is the first store to offer the pill, which has been licensed for use in Ireland since 2001.

However, until now women required a trip to their doctor for a prescription to get it. Boots pharmacist Mary Rose Burke said the high demand proved it was a necessary service.

She added: "It just goes to show we were right to offer this.

"It is a vital service and we are glad it is now more accessible to women who just have to visit one of our stores to get it."

The chain, however, refused to reveal exact sales figures.

Ms Burke said she also supported the new Safe Text campaign - a website which will send young women who register a monthly reminder text to take the pill.

The website will be officially launched on Valentine's Day.
